Nobody should be surprised that America Doomed hates capitalism — it is mentioned often. However, Republicans love capitalism and so-called Free Enterprise. This is the reason that a little item about the Texas Attorney General investigating Google — a bastion of capitalism — was amusing and illustrative about how much free enterprise thinkers actually hate free enterprise. The Texas AG believes that Google’s search ranking is being unfair to some companies. I paused after reading this item — and pondered when do Republicans argue for fairness?
Clearly, Republicans like things being unfair as a general rule. They have no problem with the rich getting richer and more and more people not having even enough to sustain their lives. Hardly fair. They have no problem with wars which are grossly unfair as civilians are killed because they live in a place that has a bunch of oil. Ultimate unfairness. They have no problems discriminating against people of color, ethnicity, or religious beliefs. They are for hateful anti-immigration laws. They have no problem being against Islam while arguing for “christian” prayer in school, abstinence sex educaiton, and history text books that exalt Ronald Reagan while demeaning Thomas Jefferson. Lots of “moral” religious people and free enterprise types were also behind closing down the adult section of Craigslist. Fairness is frequently not something Republicans value.
Just a few months ago, Rand Paul — the Republican bozo running for Senate in Kentucky — declared that there were parts of the Civil Rights Law that he opposed. Namely, he felt it was perfectly fine for a private business to discriminate against anybody they wanted. So, he would allow a restaurant to not serve blacks, white, or anybody at all — like liberals. It seems there is very little fair in Paul’s mind and these views can be observed throughout the Republican party. For example, there are areas near where I live — public areas — that disallow picnics and various other social activities as an effort to keep people off of certain parts of the beach. This makes it nice for the people who live near these areas as they are largely deserted. If somebody breaks open a sandwich, the police will be surely called to enforce the no picnic rule by one of the nearby private land owners who want to protect the public non-sandwich laws. This is hardly fair but it does discourage public use of public sections of the beach — again, not fair but there are few complaints from the private land owners adjacent to the public areas.
Overall, Republicans are rarely for fair which brings us back to big old Google is being unfair. The Texas Attorney General may be right that Google is not being fair. Net neutrality is clearly not fair either. Liberals are almost always about fair. Socialism is about fair. But how hypocritical that a bunch of Republicans are declaring foul — Google is not being fair. It sounds whiny at the least. Maybe they should consult with Paul in Kentucky and have him drone on that private businesses should be able to do any old thing they want — how that is the American way — what the Founders intended. Blah. Blah. Blah. Sadly, it is frequently the American way and this is another reason that America is one fucked up place where ordinary Americans are serving at the pleasure of the modern day rich slave owners. Unfortunately, many of the American slaves don’t know they are until they lose their job, home, families, and lives. Then, they finally get a glimmer of what unfair means.

There are intangible needs for human survival which are just as important as the tangible ones such as the air we breath, the food we eat and the roofs over our heads. Attempts to valuate these intangible needs can often seem credulous. Nevertheless, attempts to enumerate intangibles can offer perspective, which Americans are desperately in need of. For example, economist, Robert Costanza, attempted to estimate the value of services rendered by nature for free, e.g. the pollination of crops, pest control, recycling, etc. He estimated the free labor done by nature at approximately $33 trillion (estimated in 1997).
Are there prices we can affix to the intangible human need for fairness, equality, freedom, respect, dignity and all other truths we hold to be self-evident? Rationality says no. Realty says yes. And in America where capitalism, NOT DEMOCRACY, rules, the truths we hold to be self-evident are nothing but lies to be measured by how much money you have.
As I mentioned before there are currently two Americas, which implies two sets of rules, two sets of standards, two measures of fairness and equality. This fact is made all the worse because Americans of ALL race, religion and creed in their bigotry and hypocrisy proclaim there is one standard all the while their actions reflect a DOUBLE STANDARD.
The intangible human need for fairness, equality, freedom, respect and dignity is not measured by something so trivial and worldly as money. If economists try to valuate these fundamental human rights, they would fail because, as the precedence of history has shown, fairness, equality, freedom, respect and dignity are measured by how many people have died fighting for it.
Whenever I think about freedom, equality and the struggle for human respect and dignity, I often reflect about the American Civil War, where hundreds of thousands of lives were violently lost over state rights and slavery. After so much death and sacrifice, the Pyrrhic victory of segregation took root under Jim Crow laws in the South. It would take another century before freedom and equality could be realized and it was only after amendments were made to the Constitution. We are currently living in economic segregation and under economic Jim Crow laws. And until something fundamental, such as an amendment to the Constitution is made, the economic klansmen/klanswomen (the plutocrats, oligarchs and elitists) will do all they can to keep America Antediluvian in the oxymoron of separate but “equal”.
Neo — excellent. I very much liked the idea of we are living under Jim Crow economics. Indeed we are. Too bad most Americans seem to think Republicans and capitalism is still the answer — based on the midterm election polling data. Maybe Americans will vote contrary to the polling. I hope so.

Admin: I concur. I hope as well the voters of the mid-term elections will look beyond party politics and not be fooled by short-term economic charity. As you mentioned, the polling data suggests voters are playing right into the hands of corporate interests, who have an ace up their sleeves with Citizens United. Republican victories ensures political gridlock and that favors the establishment. With political stalemates, the rich can ride out the next several years of DEPRESSION, continue to rake in the money and maintain their fiefdoms.
