Thomas Jefferson died on the Fourth of July, 50 years after the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress in 1776. Jefferson was a Deist, believed in one God, disagreed with many fundamental tents of the Bible, and was maligned as an infidel when running for President in 1800. Jefferson felt very strongly about a separation of Church and State to protect the State from the “tyranny that is religion”. Jefferson hated Calvinism which is the basis for American Christian fundamentalism today. Notable accomplishments included writing the Declaration of Independence, President for eight years, never vetoed a bill, founded University of Virginia, avid wine lover, inventor, scholar, and the successful, peaceful purchase of the middle third of America — the Louisiana Purchase.
In the year 2010, Jefferson would be shocked at the invasion of Church into State, the crazies on the US Supreme Court, the disrespect of the environment in the Gulf, and the extremes on the right today. Jefferson’s love of science and learning would make him a liberal today. People like Glenn Beck who use Jefferson’s name constantly would be ridiculed by him. Jefferson believed the banks to be more dangerous than standing armies — something proved again in America just two years ago. Jefferson believed that the British system was corrupt and advocated “strong devotion of civic virtue”. It is clear he would have no part of the right wing’s lies, deception, and greed today. Jefferson fathered American exceptionalism but this was not the notion pirated by the radical right today — instead, he was proud that America was a land of immigrants and would have no part of the nonsense going on in Arizona.
Jefferson was perhaps one of the greatest American Presidents.
You’ve completely mischaracterized Jefferson with this little hit piece. The founders were not liberals but conservatives who believe in liberty and freedom. The founders also understood that man “has God given rights” and drafted all the documents our country was founded on with this premise in mind. So please spare me you left wing interpretation of Jefferson, I don’t buy it and I absolutely certain Jefferson wouldn’t either.
You would have been one of the people who called Jefferson an infidel in 1800 just because he didn’t believe in your version of god. You know little about Jefferson and simply mimic right wing bullshit. There is no freedom in America apart from money. I have written about this many times,
